Mark started
playing Trumpet at the age of nine in Drumgor Primary School, Craigavon.
From there he joined Thomas Street Silver Band, ironically also known as
the ‘1st Portadown Old Boys’, where he took up his present
instrument, The Cornet. The band soon recognized his talent as he became principal cornet, not long after joining, a position he held for six years before moving to The Strandtown Silver Band from Belfast, where he again played Solo Cornet, proudly following in his father’s footsteps, for two years. In 1988 Mark was invited to join The 1st Old Boys Silver Band and also The City of Belfast School of Music, by Alfred G. Burch, then conductor of the 1st Old Boys and Head of Brass at the School of Music. Playing solo cornet with the concert band and The Old Boys. He then moved on to Principal Trumpet with the CBYO where he went on tour to Paris, Holland and Belgium. His trumpet playing developed alongside his cornet work and he played with the John Anderson Big Band, performing with the band for President Clinton at Belfast City Hall in 1996. In terms of achievements Mark has won both the Junior and Senior N.I. Brass Band League Solo Championships and is The Current BBL Slow Melody Champion. He has continued his trumpet playing with the Castleward Opera Orchestra, Shows plus various dance bands, including “The Victor Curry Band”. Mark continues his cornet playing with the 1st Old Boys and the Band and various other bands . Where he as played all over the world including America, Canada, Nova Scotia, Germany, Poland and The Falklands, where he has performed in a number of concert venues. Highlights of Mark’s playing career include playing Rep for The Fodens Richardson Band in their winning performance of ‘Prague’ at the 2003 North West Areas in Blackpool and also playing for them in a number of concerts. Also representing the country with 1st Old Boys in 4 European Brass Band Championships, playing over 4 world premiers compositions and also in the All England International Masters contest In 2009 he had the honour of representing Northern Ireland again with 1st old Boys playing another World Premier Fanfare in the BBC Proms alongside Sir James Galway and the trumpet and trombones of the BBC symphony Orchestra in a live link up from the Royal Albert Hall, London. Mark and wife, Jacklin have formed the 1st Old Boys Youth Band working closely with 28 young brass musicians |
